Social Media Content Creators Driving Unofficial Market for Unapproved Weight-Loss Drug

An underground market for unapproved weight-loss drugs is being driven by social media fitness personalities and sellers on messaging platforms, according to recent findings.

Investigational Treatment Acquiring Popularity Via Social Media

The experimental drug, which remains in clinical trials, is being promoted by social media influencers for its supposed weight-reducing properties. Viewers are urged to contact these accounts privately for source information, while also obtaining promotional offers.

Thriving Commerce on Messaging Platforms

Additionally, a flourishing market exists on messaging services, where communities with thousands of participants share comparison images, injection guides and assertions of next-day UK delivery. Sellers market the drug there before redirecting customers to WhatsApp for purchases.

Learning About Retatrutide

This medication is an experimental injectable created by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The treatment targets three intestinal hormones – GLP-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Preliminary studies indicate it could assist patients reduce up to a quarter of their total weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted digitally as the successor to Ozempic.

Healthcare Experts Voice Worries

However, physicians and pharmacists have cautions that the sale of what is still an unlicensed medication in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could result in users administering substances of unknown origin.

Some professionals stated the popularity for retatrutide could be linked to the rising price of approved slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Position and Enforcement

Selling retatrutide on TikTok or messaging apps is prohibited in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved medication that cannot be marketed or supplied for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Some content creators try to sidestep the regulations by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled drug, but advertising and distribution can still violate pharmaceutical, marketing, and customer laws, potentially leading to penalties, prosecution or prison.

Platform Response and Content Elimination

Based on TikTok, the platform has removed problematic content and prohibited associated hashtags and query recommendations. The organization stated it was committed to keeping the service safe and allocating resources in strengthening enforcement strategies.

Digital Marketplace Operations

Research also found groups with up to 9,000 participants marketing the experimental drug using Telegram's built-in discovery tool, which operates like a online catalog. Typing “retatrutide” instantly brings up groups with thousands of users, filled with images of weight loss, glowing testimonials and detailed guides for mixing or administering at residence.

After moments of entering one community, a vendor shared WhatsApp details, where most transactions occur. The vendor provided an guidebook and guaranteed shipping within two days. When asked whether the product was genuine, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. Not one inquired about weight, medical conditions or past usage.

Product Information and Costs

Within these communities, messages show dark colored parcels with postal service labels, stating to contain fresh supplies. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Customers can select between dry substance containers, prepared at residence with purified liquid, or ready-to-use pens typically priced at £160 for 20mg. When questioned how much time a pen should last, vendors give conflicting answers varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Service Moderation and Security Actions

A spokesperson for Telegram said it regularly monitored harmful content on its service including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Professional Cautions

“Individuals are administering substances they cannot confirm. Although the research behind retatrutide is valid, these digital versions may not include what they advertise,” stated Jason Murphy, the director of pharmaceutical services at a pharmacy service.

A medical professional of an online medical service linked the increase in demand to recent price rises for authorized weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, individuals are turning to social media. But counterfeit injections are extremely dangerous. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the environment they were produced in was clean,” she explained.

Her staff has already encountered individuals injured by personal administration from unconfirmed sources. “We understand the frustration, but purchasing from Telegram or WhatsApp is gambling with your well-being,” stated Wyllie. “These substances could be contaminated or improperly measured.”

Manufacturer Position

A representative from Eli Lilly said the substance was in third stage clinical trials and had not been reviewed or approved by any regulatory agency globally. “Consequently at this point no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, noting that any product “misleadingly claiming itself as a company investigational product not yet approved … may subject patients to possibly serious medical dangers”.
